A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed today
between NATO and the WEU at the NATO Communications and
Informations Systems Agency, NACISA, in Brussels. This
MOU, which is the first such agreement between the two
organizations, will establish NATO voice and telegraph
network connections at the WEU Headquarters in Brussels.
The WEU nations, being members of the North Atlantic
Alliance, are already served by the extensive NATO
communications networks. The new connections will
enable direct plain and encrypted communications between
the WEU Headquarters and its capitals in addition to such
existing capabilities between the capitals and NATO
Headquarters.

The MOU was signed on behalf of the WEU by Mr. Piero
Mugnai, Head of the WEU Security Bureau, and on behalf of
NATO by Rear Admiral Erich Happach, Acting Director
General, NACISA, in the presence of His Excellency
Ambassador Luis Casanova, WEU President, Mr. Panayiotis
Andreakos, representing the Assistant Secretary General,
NATO Defence Support Division.

Pollock, Project Manager, Headquarters Communications
