The NATO Secretary General, Mr. Willy Claes, informed
NATO Ambassadors at a meeting this morning of his
intention to resign today. They received this news with
deep regret and expressed their personal sympathy that
he had found it necessary to take this decision. They
also expressed their profound gratitude for his
leadership and for the major contribution which he made
to the work of the Alliance during his year in office,
which has been a momentous one for NATO.
The process of considering a possible successor has not
yet begun, and there has been no discussion among
Ambassadors on this matter.

Lors d'une reunion qui s'est tenue ce matin, le
Secretaire general de l'OTAN, M. Willy Claes, a informe
les Ambassadeurs des pays de l'Alliance de son intention
de demissionner aujourd'hui. Les Ambassadeurs ont
accueilli cette nouvelle avec un profond regret et
exprime a M. Claes leur soutien moral personnel face a
cette decision qu'il a juge necessaire de prendre. Ils
lui ont aussi exprime leur profonde gratitude pour la
facon dont il a conduit l'Alliance et puissamment
contribue a l'oeuvre de celle-ci pendant l'annee durant
laquelle il a occupe ses fonctions, et qui fut une annee
capitale pour l'OTAN.
Le processus d'examen concernant un possible successeur
n'a pas encore commence, et les Ambassadeurs ne se sont
pas entretenus de cette question.
