PRESS GUIDELINES FOR THE INFORMAL MEETING OF DEFENCE MINISTERS
WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA, 5TH-6TH OCTOBER
The Defence Ministers and Representatives of the 16 nations of the
Alliance met in Williamsburg, Virginia, the United States, on the 5th
and 6th October 1995 for informal discussions on matters of mutual
concern.
The Ministers exchanged views on the following topics in particular:
the further development of NATO's co-operation with its Partners
including the defence implications of enlargement, the Partnership for
Peace, and the Alliance's relations with Russia and Ukraine; the
situation in the former Yugoslavia; the continuing adaption of NATO's
structures to meet the current challenges to European security and
stability; and security in the Mediterranean. The Ministers also
visited the USS Mount Whitney and the USS Enterprise.
No decisions were sought at this informal meeting, the third of its
kind, but the Ministers' discussions revealed substantial consensus on
these and other important topics. The Ministers expressed their
appreciation to their American colleague, William Perry, for hosting
the meeting.

LA DEFENSE A WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIE, LES 5 ET 6 OCTOBRE
Les Ministres de la defense et Representants des seize pays de
l'Alliance se sont reunis a Williamsburg, Virginie (Etats-Unis), les 5
et 6 octobre 1995, pour proceder a un echange de vues informel sur des
sujets d'interet mutuel.
Les Ministres on traite plus particulierement des questions suivantes:
le developpement de la cooperation entre l'OTAN et ses Partenaires, y
compris les incidences de l'elargissement en matiere de defense, le
Partenariat pour la paix et les relations de l'Alliance avec la Russie
et l'Ukraine; la situation dans l'ex-Yougoslavie; la poursuite de
l'adaptation des structures de l'OTAN face aux defis actuels concernant
la securite et la stabilite europeennes; la securite en Mediterranee.
Par ailleurs, les Ministres ont ete recus a bord du USS Mount Whitney
et de USS Enterprise.
Aucune decision ne devait etre prise a l'occasion de cette reunion
informelle, la troisieme du genre, mais les echanges de vues entre le
Ministres on fait apparaitre un large consensus sur ces questions et
sur d'autres sujets importants. Les Ministres ont remercie leur
collegue americain, M. William Perry, d'avoir ete l'hote de la reunion.
