NATO supports international efforts to achieve anegotiated peace settlement in the Former Yugoslavia. In this regard, it strongly supports the continuedpresence of UN forces and believes that the UN PeaceForces perform an essential mission and that withdrawalcan be considered only as a last resort.

NATO's planning for a possible UN withdrawal istherefore on a contingency basis only. In this context, following intensive work in the Military Committee oncontingency planning for withdrawal, the Councilhas been fully engaged in the process of considering andapproving the planning as a matter of priority. Todayit has provisionally approved the plan. The UN andnon-NATO troop contributors will shortly receive abriefing on the plan.

NATO's planning will be continuously updated in thecourse of which a number of issues will need to bepursued further and resolved. The plan will only befinally approved by Council if and when a withdrawaloperation needs to be implemented following a UNrequest.
