The United States, Germany, France and Italy have agreed last week to develop cooperatively a Medium Extended Air Defence System (MEADS).

The United States, Germany, France and Italy have agreed last week to develop cooperatively a Medium Extended Air Defence System (MEADS).

The four nations are seeking an extended air defence capability against ballistic missiles. The US will provide 50% of the funding, France and Germany will contribute 20% each and Italy 10%.

"The logic in favour of greater allied armaments cooperation has become utterly compelling and is further evidence of a much needed renaissance in transatlantic armaments cooperation", Mr. Robin Beard, NATO's Assistant Secretary General for Defence Support, said.
