The Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Willy Claes,
welcomes Ukraine's accession to the NPT as a highly
important contribution to enhanced international
security and stability. Mr. Claes considers this
decision as a valuable support to the NPT and to the
efforts aimed at achieving its unconditional and
indefinite extension.
Mr. Claes also welcomes this decision since it removes
the last obstacle to the entry into force of the
historic START-1 treaty.
He expresses his expectation that it will pave the way
for a rapid ratification and entry into force of the
START-2 treaty between the United States and Russia.
