The NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society
Pilot Study on "Environmental Aspects of Reusing Former
Military Lands" will meet in Munich on October 25-28, 1994
bringing together governmental and industry experts from
NATO and the North Atlantic Cooperation Council (NACC)
countries to address the environmental cleanup of military
bases.
The Pilot Study, jointly led by the United States and
Germany, is holding its meeting in conjunction with the
American Defence Preparedness Association/Deutsche
Aerospace "Environmental Remediation Opportunities
Conference", to foster communication between
government and industry on dealing with the environmental
legacy of the Cold War.
Dr. Jean-Marie Cadiou, NATO Assistant Secretary General
for Scientific and Environmental Affairs, will give the
opening address.
The Pilot Study on Environmental Aspects of Reusing Former
Military Lands was initiated in response to a NACC
Workplan mandate to cooperate on environmental
contamination at military sites. With a membership
composed of the responsible officials from both NATO and
NACC states, the group is uniquely positioned to make an
important contribution in this field. Participating
states include Belarus, Belgium, Canada, the Czech
Republic, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania,
the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, the Slovak
Republic, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United
States. The Pilot Study is co-chaired by the United
States Department of Defence and the German Ministry for
the Environment.
