A Symposium on Maritime Environmental Protection to be
held next week in Varna, Bulgaria, is in the view of NATO
Assistant Secretary General, Mr Robin Beard "a new and
important step in NATO cooperation programmes, which
points the way forward to an expansion of the practical
programme of co-operation with our new partners."

The Symposium sponsored by NATO's Naval Armaments Group is
the first such event dealing with defence equipment to
take place in a Partner country. All of the NATO navies
and many of the Cooperation Partners will be represented
in Varna.

The Symposium will focus mainly on shipborne equipment,
development and ship design to reduce pollution from naval
vessels and is intended to generate cooperation in this
vital area. Technical results of common studies in this
area area might be applicable to commercial shipping.

The Symposium will include five Technical Sessions
chairedby specialists from NATO nations, on Naval
environmental policies, procedures and organization;ship
design; protection and control of hazardous materials;
ship-shore interfaces and shore facilities; and oil and
hazardous material spill prevention and response.

The participants will have the opportunity to visit naval
vessels from Greece,Italy, Russia, Turkey and the United
States, present in the Varna harbour.
