The Permanent Representatives met today to consult on the next Secretary General. At a subsequent formal Council meeting, the North Atlantic Council decided to send a letter to the Belgian Foreign Minister, Mr. Willy Claes, asking him if he was ready to serve as NATO Secretary General, if Allied governments so decide.
