At the NATO Summit meeting in January this year, AllianceHeads of State and Government proposed joint peacekeepingfield exercises with Partners beginning in 1994 in orderto promote closer military cooperation andinteroperability.

At the NATO Summit meeting in January this year, AllianceHeads of State and Government proposed joint peacekeepingfield exercises with Partners beginning in 1994 in orderto promote closer military cooperation andinteroperability.

This autumn three such exercises have been planned. Thefirst, Exercise Cooperative Bridge, will be conducted inPoland in the Biedrusko training area, near Poznan, from12 to 16 September. A maritime exercise, CooperativeVenture, will take place from 28 September to 7 Octoberin the North Sea and in the Skagerak waters. The thirdexercise, Cooperative Spirit, will be held in theNetherlands in the Harskamp military training area, Eastof Utrecht, from 24 to 28 October.

In all three exercises NATO Allies and Partners willparticipate. Many of those not contributing militaryforces to these exercises will provide observers. Inaddition the UN, CSCE and WEU have been invited toobserve the exercises. The main purpose of the exercisesis to promote closer military cooperation andinteroperability in the field of peacekeeping through thetraining and exercising of specific peacekeeping skills.

Prior to each exercise a specific press release will beissued with information about participants and otherexercise detail. In addition to these three exercisesmany other bilateral and multilateral exercises involvingAllies and Partners have already taken place in 1994, andmore are scheduled for the autumn and for 1995.
