NATO is sending two teams between 1 and 4
February 1994 to Central and East European countries which
have requested briefings on Partnership for Peace. The
first team, led by Ambassador Ole Bierring, Denmark's
Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Council
(NAC), and Ambassador Dr. Hermann Freiherr von Richthofen,
Germany's Permanent Representative to the NAC, will visit
Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. The second team, led
by NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs
Gebhardt von Moltke, will go to Albania, Bulgaria, Romania,
Hungary, and the Czech Republic. We anticipate that a
third team will visit Slovakia and Ukraine next week.

Background on "Partnership for Peace"

"Partnership for Peace" was offered by the NATO
Summit (10 and 11 January 1994) to all NACC partner states
and other CSCE states able and willing to contribute to
this programme. The invitation was signed by NATO's Heads
of State and Government*.

The first step towards participation is to sign
the Framework Document attached to the invitation issued by
the NATO Summit. Since the Framework Document was opened
for signature on Monday 24 January, Romania and Lithania
have already signed; Poland and Estonia will sign on 2 and
3 February respectively. Other countries have indicated
their intention to sign the agreement within the next few
weeks.
