NATO's Defence Planning Committee today announced its agreement to a request from President Clinton to release General John M. Shalikashvili from his responsibilities as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, at a date yet to be determined.

In the name of the governments represented on the Committee the DPC agreed to his request with great regret, and expressed its deep and lasting gratitude to General Shalikashvili for his distinguished service as Supreme Allied Commander,

The DPC also asked President Clinton to nominate an officer of the United states Armed Forces for appointment by the Committee as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, to succeed General Shalikashvili.
