At the meeting of the North Atlantic Cooperation
Council (NACC) in Athens on 11th June, Foreign Ministers endorsed
a wide-ranging series of measures for practical cooperation in
peacekeeping. The first major activity in the new programme will
be a high level seminar on peacekeeping, to be held in Prague
from 3O June to 2 July, jointly organised by NATO and the Czech
Defence Ministry. The specific aim of this seminar will be to
further the work of the NACC Ad Hoc Group on Cooperation in
Peacekeeping by discussing conceptual and doctrinal aspects of
peacekeeping and exchanging practical experiences.

The two and a half day seminar will be based on a
series of expert presentations from NACC member states, the
United Nations and the Conference on Security and Cooperation in
Europe (CSCE). Austria, Finland and Sweden will also participate
in the seminar.

The presentations and discussions will cover the
following themes:
- the nature of peacekeeping
- the military challenges of multinational peacekeeping
- the political and civil challenges of multinational
peacekeeping
- the way ahead for peacekeeping operations.

The seminar will be opened by the Minister of Defence
of the Czech Republic, Mr. Baudys. The Chairman of the NATO
Military Committee, Field Marshal Sir Richard Vincent, will be
the keynote speaker. Closing remarks will be given by NATO
Assistant Secretary General Michael Legge.

Media opportunities

Final news conferences will be held at the end of the
Seminar, at about 13:00 on 2 July.
