Утром в среду (18 мая 2022 г.) Финляндия и Швеция одновременно подали свои официальные заявки на вступлении в НАТО.

Заявки были переданы послом Финляндии в НАТО Клаусом Корхоненом и, соответственно, послом Швеции в НАТО Акселем Вернхоффом Генеральному секретарю НАТО Йенсу Столтенбергу в штаб-квартире Североатлантического союза в Брюсселе. Г-н Столтенберг тепло приветствовал эти заявки, сказав: «Это хороший день в критический для нашей безопасности момент».
