The post of the NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan was originally created in October 2003, when NATO took the lead of the UN-mandated International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. His mandate was to carry forward the Alliance's political-military objectives in Afghanistan, by representing the political leadership of the Alliance officially and publicly. His role was to liaise with the authorities, civil society, representatives of the international community and neighbouring countries.

The current Senior Civilian Representative is Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo. In August 2021, he played a crucial role in helping coordinate evacuations from Kabul in one of the largest airlift efforts operations in history.
