Брюссель, 2 января – Сегодня генерал Кнуд Бартельс (Дания) вступил в должность председателя Военного комитета, на которую был избран начальниками генеральных штабов 28 стран НАТО 17 сентября 2011 г. Генерал Бартельс сменил на этом посту адмирала Джампаоло ди Паолу (Италия).
Председатель Военного комитета НАТО является главным военным советником Генерального секретаря и посредником, через которого принятые на основе консенсуса рекомендации начальников генеральных штабов стран НАТО, передаются в политический орган НАТО - Североатлантический совет.
Председатель Военного комитета избирается на трехлетний срок. С 1963 года, когда данная должность стала постоянной, ее занимали 16 офицеров из следующих стран НАТО: Германия (5 раз), Великобритания (3 раза), Канада, Италия и Норвегия (2 раза каждая), Бельгия и Нидерланды (1 раз каждая).
