Pre-Summit polling results show strong support for NATO and for continued assistance to Ukraine

Ahead of the 2023 NATO Summit in Vilnius, NATO commissioned a survey across all 31 Allied nations. The survey measures public opinion in Allied nations, including support for NATO membership, collective defence, and defence spending. Overall, support for NATO remains strong, as does support for continuing to assist Ukraine.
In line with previous findings, a large majority of respondents consider NATO important to the future security of their nation (73%), and 70% would vote for their nation to remain a NATO member in a referendum. Support for maintaining or increasing defence spending stands at 73%.
The majority of respondents agree their nation should defend another NATO Ally if attacked (64%) and 62% agree NATO membership makes foreign attack less likely.
Just over half among survey respondents view China unfavourably (54%), while two thirds view Russia unfavourably (66%) – both metrics in line with findings from 12 months ago.
As in NATO’s 2022 pre-Summit study, metrics were included regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Around two thirds of Allied respondents consider Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to have affected the safety and security of their country (64%). Respondents’ support for their nation continuing to provide assistance to Ukraine is strong (65%).
