NATO Military Committee receives brief on Israeli approach to military innovation
On 8 May 2023, the NATO Military Committee received an overview on the Israeli Defence Forces Innovation Strategy, including new Israeli military capabilities and their application of artificial intelligence and robotics on the battlefield. The NATO Military Representatives regularly meet with Partner Nations to receive updates and exchanges views on topics of mutual interest.
Opening the meeting, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer welcomed Colonel Amit Lanir, the Military Representative for Israel to NATO and his colleague, Colonel Omer Sapir, senior expert on the agenda topic. “The NATO Military Committee follows closely any developments in military innovation. Innovation, and more broadly emerging disruptive technologies, will directly contribute to the adaptation of NATO and its Military Strategy to the new geopolitical context”, underlined the Admiral in his remarks.
Colonel Omer Sapir briefed the NATO Military Representatives and Invitee Sweden on the Israeli Defence Forces Innovation Strategy and how they are integrating innovation and, what they call “disruptive innovation”, which includes a variety of emerging disruptive technologies, into their military capability development process as well as adapting their use to the battlefield and their training programme for their forces.
Concluding the meeting, Admiral Bauer thanked the Israeli representative for sharing their approach to technology. “We appreciate all opportunities to learn from our Partners on their successful integration of multi-domain operations across all warfighting domains, from the strategic to the tactical, especially when we can then apply similar processes to our own plans”, he concluded.
For more than twenty years, Israel has been an active NATO partner through the Mediterranean Dialogue, the only security forum that brings together NATO Allies with Israel and Arab countries. In 2017, Israel established a permanent and official mission to NATO headquarters.
