NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană addressed the Schuman Security and Defence Forum in Brussels on Tuesday (21 March 2023), underlining the importance of working with like-minded partners and organisations in defence of the rules-based international order.
Mr Geoană emphasised the growing pressure on international order as a result of Russia’s war against Ukraine, stressing that democracy is under attack and our security is at stake. In this context, he underlined the particular importance of strengthening NATO-EU cooperation. NATO-EU cooperation has reached unprecedented levels in recent years, and particularly since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Mr Geoană’s co-panelists were Helga Schmid, Secretary General of OSCE; Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s Minister of Defence and Chair of ASEAN; Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under Secretary-General for Peace Operations and Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary General of the League of Arab States. The panel was moderated by Dr Rosa Balfour, Director of Carnegie Europe and the theme was “upholding multilateralism and rules-based international order.”
