From 22 to 25 November 2021, the Director General of the NATO International Military Staff, Lieutenant General Hans-Werner Wiermann hosted high-level Pakistani officials for military staff talks at NATO HQ.

Lieutenant General Wiermann welcomed his Pakistani counterpart, Lieutenant General Muhammad Waseem Ashraf, Director General of the Joint Staff, for the latest round of military-to-military staff talks, which have been delayed due to COVID for over a year. Both Directors exchanged views on the respective security challenges facing Pakistan and NATO. General Wiermann reiterated that NATO values the military-to-military cooperation that ensues from the Pakistan – NATO partnership.  “Pakistan is a critical partner in the war on terror and terrorism continues to pose a threat to the security of our populations and to international stability”, emphasised General Wiermann.

Lieutenant General Wiermann also recognized the contributions Pakistan continues to make in the fight against terrorism and thanked Lieutenant General Ashraf for his nation’s continued support to the Alliance’s ongoing efforts in the region.  “NATO’s role in the fight against terrorism is an integral part of the Alliance’s 360-degree approach to deterrence and defence, and to projecting stability. But this is not the responsibility of one Nation or one organisation but rather a shared responsibility. Together, Allies and Partners have more scope to act and protect”, added the General.

Concluding the staff talks, Generals Wiermann and Ashraf agreed on a military-to-military cooperation work plan for the coming year. “Improving our military cooperation will further strengthen our partnership. We have much to learn from each other”, summarised General Wiermann.

In addition to the staff talks, the Pakistani delegation’s visit included meetings with Admiral Rob Bauer, the Chair of the Military Committee, Mr. Nick Dean, Deputy Senior Civilian Representative for Afghanistan, Lieutenant General Brice Houdet, SHAPE Vice Chief of Staff, and Rear Admiral Bulent Turan, SHAPE Deputy Chief of Staff, Partnership Directorate.
