Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană outlined the opportunities of the NATO 2030 initiative in his address to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly on Monday (17 May 2021). Looking ahead to the NATO Summit, the Deputy Secretary General called it a pivotal moment for NATO, underscoring the need to reinforce unity and solidarity, accelerate adaptation, and prepare the Alliance for the future.

The NATO 2030 initiative sets out an ambitious agenda which will be at the heart of the NATO Summit on June 14, Mr Geoană explained. He outlined the initiative’s priorities, including the need to strengthen collective defence and focus on resilience. NATO will also need to broaden its approach to security, he explained, including by addressing the security implications of climate change and maintaining NATO’s technological edge. He added that NATO 2030 is also about reaffirming NATO’s values and safeguarding the rules-based international order. The Deputy Secretary General stressed the importance of a strong transatlantic bond to meet the challenges of tomorrow together, demonstrating solidarity in words and in deeds.
