В среду, 18 июля 2012 г. заместитель генерального секретаря НАТО посол Александр Вершбоу посетил с визитом Скопье в рамках поездки по трем балканским странам, стремящимся к членству в НАТО.
«На встрече в верхах в Чикаго была ясно обозначена важность, которую НАТО продолжает придавать политике открытых дверей и региону Западных Балкан. Мы хотим продвигать вперед процесс расширения», – сказал заместитель генерального секретаря. «Нужны смелые политические решения, чтобы можно было достичь стратегической цели вашей страны – членства в НАТО и ЕС. Потому что будущее всего региона – интеграция в евроатлантическую семью», – добавил он.
В ходе визита посол Вершбоу встретился с премьер-министром Николой Груевским, министром иностранных дел Николой Попоским, министром обороны Фатмиром Бесими и председателем Демократического союза за интеграцию г-ном Али Ахмети, который является ключевым членом коалиционного правительства.
