A military plane filled with 45 tons of medical supplies landed at Bucharest airport on Wednesday morning (8 April 2020). The C-17 Globemaster transport plane, which arrived from Seoul, carried 100,000 protective medical suits as part of efforts to combat the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The Romanian government had purchased the equipment.
The early morning arrival marked the third shipment of medical supplies from the Republic of Korea to Romania using C-17 transport aircraft attached to the NATO-supported Strategic Airlift Capability. The flight was paid for by the United States in support of the Romanian government and coordinated by Romania’s National Military Command Centre.
Under the Strategic Airlift Capability, ten NATO Allies and two NATO partner countries jointly own and operate three C-17 heavy cargo aircraft, sharing flying hours and costs. The C-17 aircraft are based at Papa airbase in Hungary. The NATO Support and Procurement Agency manages the airlift programme.
