At a book talk at NATO Headquarters on 9 June 2017, Dr Louise Shelley – a Professor at George Mason University, a well-known researcher and a leading expert on the relationship among terrorism, organised crime and corruption as well as human trafficking, transnational crime and terrorism – presented and discussed her thoughts on her recent work “Dirty Entanglements: Corruption, Crime and Terrorism”.
She argues that corruption, crime and terrorism are undoubtedly entangled and have clear implications for global peace and security – and moreover stresses that these problems concern all countries, not just fragile states and the less developed world. With a scientific approach and extensive reading references and information, Louise Shelley demonstrates a clear and present interrelation among these three phenomena and their impact on global peace and security.
Other participants in the discussion included Dr Juliette Bird of NATO’s Counter-Terrorism Section, LtCol Sebastian Grumer of NATO’s International Military Staff, Policy & Capabilities Division, Strategic Issues Team, and Dr Susan Pond, who heads up NATO’s Building Integrity Initiative.
This event, which was a part of NATO’s effort to promote good governance, transparency and accountability, coincided with International Archive Day.
