НАТО робить важливий крок в поглибленні своїх відносин з Багдадом, призначивши у четвер, 1 червня 2017 року, пана Пола Сміта з Великої Британії на посаду Старшого цивільного представника НАТО в Іраку. Пан Сміт представлятиме Генерального секретаря НАТО і Альянс загалом тоді, коли НАТО продовжує допомагати Іраку зміцнити свої інституції безпеки, які борються проти тероризму. Пан Сміт прийшов на заміну панові Річарду Фро з Канади, який обіймав цю посаду останнім часом.
