NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow welcomed Mr. Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to NATO Headquarters on Wednesday (27 May 2015) for talks on international issues of mutual concern. The meeting was a continuation of the regular high-level dialogue between NATO and the ICRC.
The Deputy Secretary General expressed appreciation for the important work of the ICRC, and welcomed its deepened cooperation with the Alliance in recent years, including participation in NATO exercises. Ambassador Vershbow updated Mr. Maurer on the Alliance’s plans for continued engagement in Afghanistan after the current Resolute Support mission. He further presented NATO’s assessment of the current situation in eastern Ukraine, and outlined the Alliance’s approach to challenges emanating from an unstable Middle East and North Africa.
NATO and the ICRC have a longstanding relationship guided by a Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement outlines how the two organisations consult on humanitarian issues, and sets out how international humanitarian law aspects are covered in NATO military training and exercises.
