In the run-up to the Alliance’s Lisbon Summit in November, on 26 October a group of seven Portuguese mayors visited the NATO Public Diplomacy Division (PDD) in Brussels, Belgium. The visit aimed to help prioritise communication efforts with key Portuguese opinion leaders.
The group was briefed by Acting Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, Dr Stefanie Babst, on NATO’s new Strategic Concept. The group was also briefed on NATO’s operations in Afghanistan, public diplomacy efforts leading to the Lisbon Summit, relations with Russia and relations with the European Union.
In addition, the mayors of the larger Portuguese cities met with the Permanent Representative of Portugal, Ambassador João Mira Gomes, to discuss Portugal’s role in the Alliance and other matters of interest to Portuguese audiences.
Throughout 2010, NATO PDD has welcomed a number of groups from Portugal, such as representatives from the Portuguese Academy of Science, the Portuguese Geographical Society and the media. Groups from the Association of Women Jurists, the Portuguese Platform for Women’s Rights and the Portuguese Association of Women Scientists have also visited.
