A “comprehensive approach to today’s risks and threats” is a key characteristic of NATO today, the Alliance's Deputy Secretary General Claudio Bisogniero said during a keynote address at the Forum on Euro-Atlantic Security in Krakow, Poland.
The first session, opened by Polish Minister of Defence Bogdan Klich on 23 October, looked at the current shape of transatlantic relations and the NATO’s role as a “global” actor.
“What I believe people are trying to capture with the term “global” is NATO’s shift from a mainly geographical understanding of security to a functional approach... XXI century security challenges - such as terrorism, the spread of weapons of mass destruction and regional instability - can only be dealt with through a broad and also seamless approach”, said Ambassador Bisogniero.
NATO Deputy Secretary General also stressed the indispensability of a true comprehensive approach, in which all major international organizations share the burden. “Slowly but surely, we are all realising that there is simply no alternative to closer cooperation”, he added.
Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski opened the second session of the conference. The Forum, co-sponsored by NATO and the Polish Institute for Strategic Studies, addressed a wide-ranging audience including decision-makers, diplomats and academics from Poland and abroad.
