A workshop was held in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, 16-19 November, to study the Optics of Cosmic Dust. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with dust particles has many applications in diverse fields of science. For instance, dust affects communications in battlefield environments and dust particles affect the output of aerosol monitors used to detect both pollutants and chemical and biological warfare agents.
The workshop was supported under the NATO Science Programme and was organised by specialists from the US Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi, Maryland, and the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. It brought together some 40 experts with different specialities from 13 countries.
It was the first formal gathering of a new generation of scientists working in the area, which is currently undergoing a renaissance because of the development of high performance computers which can more accurately model the cosmic dust phenomena.
