The Deputy Secretary of State of the United States, Mr Richard L. Armitage, came to NATO HQ on 20 September to brief the Secretary General, Lord Robertson, and the North Atlantic Council on information acquired up to now by the United States authorities on the terrorist attacks of 11 September.
At a joint press event with Lord Robertson, Mr Armitage declared that President Bush was putting together a grand coalition in preparation for a sustained campaign against terrorism.
This, he added, would be a global war on terrorism that would not only be aimed against terrorists and their infrastructure in Afghanistan. Lord Robertson reiterated the Alliance's solidarity with the United States and its determination to collectively contribute, with other members of the international community, in fighting terrorism.
The Deputy Secretary of State expressed his condolences to the citizens from NATO member countries who had been victims of last week's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. He also thanked the Alliance for the rapid invocation of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.
