In the wake of public interest in possible environmental health risks associated with the use of depleted uranium in the Balkans, the North Atlantic Council, NATO's highest decision-making body, met on Wednesday 10 January.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Secretary General said that: "There is no evidence currently available to suggest that exposure to expended depleted uranium munitions represents a significant health risk for NATO-led forces or the civilian population in the Balkans."
The Council also decided that NATO will cooperate fully with any investigations on this subject and will consult with all past and present SFOR and KFOR contributing countries. A selection of documents and presentations offering information about depleted uranium are now available on the NATO web site.
