Thousands of weapons, rounds of ammunition, hand grenades, mines, explosives and other arms were handed over for destruction by the local population of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1999. With the success of Operation Harvest (see NATO Update 27 October-2 November), the NATO-led Stabilisation Force (SFOR), has decided to continue this operation which aims to clear the country of as many illegally possessed weapons as possible.
SFOR has been reinforcing its campaign by distributing leaflets and broadcasting announcements on radio stations. In particular, a special effort has been made to make children aware of the dangers of handling any type of warlike material.
