A workshop on "Radioecological Investigations of Nuclear Test Sites" took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 7-10 June. It was held to evaluate existing scientific methods for measuring the extent of radioactive contamination and to discuss if there were more effective alternatives.
Over 400 nuclear explosions were produced during nuclear tests in Kazakhstan in past years. Now that the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site is no longer in use, large-scale investigations of its territory have begun.
Sponsored by the NATO Science Programme, the workshop participants included experts from the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, as well as from Russia, Slovakia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, the United States, Norway, Hungary, and Kazakhstan.
