Finnish conscripts load a missile onto a Finnish Air Force F/A‑18 Hornet during Exercise Cold Response 2026 in Rovaniemi, Finland. Exercise Cold Response 2026 showcased how Allied aircraft and aircrews operate in one of the most demanding environments on earth. In Finland’s Lapland region, Finnish F/A-18 fighter jets launched from icy runways while US Marines KC-130 tankers demonstrated their vital refuelling capabilities, both in the air, extending mission range, and on the ground, where they can set up temporary refuelling spots to support aircraft operation in remote locations. Pilots, ground crews and support teams trained side by side to maintain aircraft, coordinate sorties and ensure safe operations despite the Arctic’s extreme temperatures and challenging conditions. Cold Response is part of NATO’s recently established vigilance activity Arctic Sentry, dedicated to the defence and security of the High North and the Arctic, and it took place in Norway and Finland from 9 to 20 March 2026.
