On Tuesday 2 December, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte previewed the forthcoming meeting of Allied Foreign Ministers at a press conference at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.
Detailing the forthcoming meeting, the Secretary General explained that “As we look ahead to the next NATO Summit in Ankara in July, Allies will address the evolving threats to our security. They will review the action taken to strengthen our deterrence and defence, and we will also meet in the NATO-Ukraine Council with Foreign Minister Sybiha, along with EU High Representative Kallas.”
Mr Rutte commended Allies for making meaningful progress in boosting defence investment and scaling up defence production as they begin delivering on the bold commitments made at the NATO Summit in The Hague. At the same time, the Secretary General warned against complacency, urging continued momentum and accountability in light of evolving threats.
Underscoring the close link between transatlantic security and Ukraine’s future, Mr Rutte stated, “We are all working to bring the war against Ukraine to an end with a just and lasting peace. We welcome the ongoing efforts led by the United States to make this a reality.” He continued that he was “confident that these sustained efforts will, eventually, restore peace in Europe” and described Allied commitment to Ukraine as unwavering.
The Secretary General concluded that Allies are ready, willing, and able to work together, to keep our one billion citizens safe today, and into the future.
