Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo assumes the role of the new NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan

Today (1 June 2020), Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo of Italy takes up his role as the NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said: “Ambassador Pontecorvo brings a long-standing diplomatic experience, including on Afghanistan and the broad regional context. I look forward to working closely with him at this critical juncture for Afghanistan’s future.”

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Wednesday (5 December 2018) that he has appointed Sir Nicholas Kay of the United Kingdom as the next NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan. Mr. Stoltenberg made the announcement following a meeting of Foreign Ministers on the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission.

Ambassador Maurits Jochems, NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, attended the swearing of Dr. Ashraf Ghani as President of Afghanistan at a ceremony held today [Monday, 29 September] in Kabul. The event also saw the appointment of presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah as Chief Executive Officer of the National Unity Government, as agreed by the two candidates on 21 September.

Provincial Reconstruction Teams look at way forward in Afghanistan

At the 2010 Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) Conference held in Kabul on the 16 and 17 March, NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative, Ambassador Mark Sedwill, stressed PRTs’ role in promoting reconstruction, development and good governance throughout Afghanistan; a role that will be key to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) strategy over the next 18 months.
