NATO co-funded demilitarization facility re-opens in Serbia

On Wednesday (25 September 2019), dozens of officials from Serbia, donor countries and NATO gathered in the Serbian town of Kragujevac to mark the reopening and expansion of the country’s main demilitarization facility. The refurbished facility will help speed up the destruction of around 1,300 tons of old bullets, mortars, rockets and missiles from Serbian stockpiles, making Serbia and the region safer.

NATO Trust Fund improves services to amputees in Ukraine

NATO is helping improve medical services for amputees in the Ukrainian armed forces through a new two-year programme at the Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&A) Institute in Kharkiv. Funded by NATO’s medical rehabilitation Trust Fund for Ukraine, the bachelor-level programme will help raise the level of medical services for amputees to international standards. The number of amputees in Ukraine has grown significantly in recent years, due to the conflict in the eastern part of the country.

Trust Fund to help Jordan destroy and recycle ammunition enters fourth phase

In a ceremony at NATO Headquarters on 22 November 2017, the ambassadors of Spain and Switzerland and the acting General Manager of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) signed an agreement to launch Trust Fund IV for Jordan. The ceremony was opened by Mr. Nicola de Santis, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Section, NATO Political Affairs and Security Policy Division and by Major General Nasser Al-Alathamneh, the Chief of Staff for Strategic Planning and Defence Resources of the Jordanian Armed Forces.

NATO clears unexploded ordnance in Georgia

NATO has successfully completed a three-year project to clear unexploded ordnance from an ammunition depot in central Georgia. A closing ceremony for the Georgia IV NATO Trust Fund project was held on 7 November 2017 in Tbilisi, attended by more than 70 guests including NATO and partner nations’ Ambassadors and Defence Attaches, as well as senior NATO and Georgian Government representatives.

Balakliya returns to normal life

As of 6 April 2017, Ukrainian explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams have cleared the territory of Balakliya town and 9 settlements in the vicinity. The contaminated area in and around Balakliya was reduced from 10 km to 1 km.
