In a letter to the Ambassador of India to Belgium on 12 July, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer expressed his condolences and condemned the barbaric attacks in Mumbai and Srinagar on 11 July.

“NATO stands with India in this difficult time. We condemn these barbaric acts in the strongest possible terms, and mourn the senseless loss of innocent lives they have caused,” the letter says.

Challenge to common values

The attacks, the Secretary General wrote, “pose a direct challenge to our common security and to the core democratic values we share with India.”

“These most recent crimes underscore the insidious nature of a terrorist threat all too familiar to the member states of the Alliance , which we condemn wherever it strikes.”

Mr. De Hoop Scheffer said NATO will continue to strengthen its contribution to the international community’s struggle against terrorism.
