Progress in the reform of professional military education in Armenia

The NATO Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP) expert team visited Armenia’s Ministry of Defence in February 2017 to bring forward consultations on defence education.
The team included leading experts from Canada, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. Representatives from the leadership of the National Defence Research University, the Vazgen Sargsyan Military University, the Marshall A. Khanperyanc Military Aviation University and the Warrant Officers School of Armenia’s Ministry of Defence participated in the consultations.
The aim of the visit was to outline major features of activities and cooperation between NATO and the Department of Personnel and Military Education of Armenia’ Ministry of Defence in 2016 and to define a roadmap of cooperation for 2017.
This was an opportunity to present results of the reform process taking place in both military education and military educational institutions in Armenia. It also offered incentives to discuss the review of educational programmes, efforts to raise the bar of academic staff excellence, and compliance with the Bologna standards in higher military education.
A lecture entitled "Western Operational Arts: Comparative Analysis of Western and Soviet Models" was presented to the Command and Staff College of Armenia’s Ministry of Defence. The Head of Armenia’s National Defence Research University presented a substantial report on the main areas of work carried out in 2016; highlighted the benefits of being able to educate students in Armenia instead of sending them abroad; and also mentioned the University’s increased focus on cyber security.
