The eighth Annual Defence Educators’ Programme was hosted at the Serbian University of Defence in Belgrade from 7 to 11 April. The workshop allowed participants to gain better insight and understanding of the experience of all partners and Allies involved in defence education institution reform.

This workshop presents a unique opportunity to improve the existing theoretical knowledge and skills, for the transfer of knowledge and practical experience in the application of modern educational methods in teaching,” explained Lieutenant General Dr Miodrag Jevtić, Rector of the Serbian University of Defence. “Cooperation in this area is very important, because only a flexible system of military education with modern methods can meet the demands imposed by the challenges, risks and threats that we face.

A team of 10 faculty members from the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies and six nations representing the Partnership for Peace (PfP) Consortium’s Education Development Working Group (EDWG) led the interactive sessions on "Curriculum Design for New Teaching Methods."

Some 45 representatives of military education and academic institutions from 11 countries took part in the week-long workshop. Moreover, on Friday 11 April, the EDWG held a national day where 20 Serbian facility members shared their ideas on how to design advanced methods, educational programmes and distance education.

Supporting good practice in defence education

Since 2006, NATO has been cooperating with the PfP Consortium to implement Defence Education Enhancement Programmes (DEEPs), through which the Alliance advises partners on how to build, develop and reform educational institutions in the security and defence sector. With projects running in 11 countries, DEEPs focus on faculty methods and curriculum development, covering curriculum areas such as operational planning, and instructional methodology themes such as e-learning and evidence-based assessment.

Serbia aspires to develop a complete, coherent and modern education system and requested NATO support in this field in 2013. This led to the launch of a DEEP between Serbia and NATO in February 2014.
