On 10 February, around 150 communications professionals gathered at NATO’s first “Public Diplomacy Forum”. The event was part of NATO’s continued efforts to engage with counterparts from other areas of activity in order to exchange best practices and foster constructive discussions about public diplomacy.

Participants from international organisations, national governments, academia, commercial and non-profit organisations benefitted from the opportunity to exchange ideas with other experts, to expand their networks, and to share their experiences in this important field.

In her keynote speech, NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Ambassador Kolinda Grabar highlighted NATO’s evolving role in the field of Public Diplomacy.

“We have to be part of the conversation… organisations like NATO must adapt and engage,” she stressed. “Failure to adapt is worse than sitting out completely – the wheels keep spinning but there’s no movement. Only wasted energy and missed opportunities,” added Ambassador Grabar.

When asked about her personal definition of Public Diplomacy, Ambassador Grabar replied: “I boil it down to three words: inform, engage and influence.  The definition is simple. But the real challenge is how to translate these simple three words into action and effective public diplomacy.”

Speakers included high-level officials from NATO and representatives from the partner institutions and companies, such as the European Commission, United Nations, World Bank, and Shell as well as Blue State Digital, a consulting firm that ran Barack Obama’s social media campaign in 2008 and 2012.

The individual panels of the Forum were focused on different aspects of the communications debate including, “Assessments in communications” and “Communications to diverse audiences”. The discussions ended with a joint interview on the topic of “Effective communications in times of change” with the NATO Spokesperson, Oana Lungescu and the European Parliament Deputy Spokesperson, Marjory Van Den Broeke.
