NATO’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood concludes his visit to Tunisia

NATO's Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Mr Javier Colomina, travelled to Tunis on 7-8 April 2025. This was his first visit to Tunisia in his new capacity. He met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Ali Nafti, the Minister of National Defence Khaled Sehili, and the National Security Advisor to the President of the Tunisian Republic Abderraouf Atallah, to discuss NATO's relations with Tunisia, and exchange views on regional security issues.

NATO delivers Special Operations Forces’ equipment to Mauritania

From 1 to 6 December 2024, NATO Defence Capacity Building (DCB) experts visited Nouakchott to support the implementation of key initiatives of Mauritania’s DCB package, including in support of special operations forces (SOF), maritime security, intelligence, military career transition, military education and addressing challenges related to small arms and light weapons.

NATO Foreign Ministers discuss situation in Ukraine and the Middle East

Meeting in Brussels on Tuesday (December 3), NATO Foreign Ministers welcomed His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan for a discussion on NATO’s southern neighbourhood and how best to work together to address common challenges to security. Jordan is one of NATO’s most important partners in the Middle East and this was the first time that King Abdullah II participated in a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers. Secretary General Mark Rutte noted that NATO will soon open a Liaison Office in Amman as an important step “in making our deep relationships in the region even stronger”.

NATO and Tunisia strengthen their cooperation on defence education

Representatives of the NATO Defence and Security Cooperation Directorate met with the leadership and personnel of Tunisia's Armed Forces and Ministry of Defence, from 5 to 8 November 2024. They took stock of the reform efforts undertaken by the country’s military education institutions, with support from NATO, through NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP).

NATO helps to boost scientific cooperation on the security implications of climate change in the southern neighbourhood

Experts on climate change from 16 countries - including NATO members and partners - as well as from NATO, the European Union and the African Union gathered in Rome (Italy), from 19 to 21 November 2024, to examine some of the most pressing climate-related challenges facing Europe and the Mediterranean. In the face of extreme weather events, rising sea levels and drought, the security implications across the Alliance’s southern neighbourhood are significant.

NATO’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Javier Colomina, travelled to Jordan, on 6 November 2024. This was his first visit to the country in his new capacity. He met with high-level officials, including the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, the Political Advisor to the King and the Director of General Intelligence. He welcomed the growing strategic partnership between NATO and Jordan and discussed issues of mutual interest, including regional security challenges.

NATO’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Javier Colomina, travelled to the Arab Republic of Egypt on 17 and 18 September 2024 for his first visit to the region in this new capacity. He met with high level officials, including from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to take stock of NATO-Egypt relations and exchange views on regional security issues.
