NATO Deputy Secretary General welcomes President of the International Committee of the Red Cross to the North Atlantic Council

On Wednesday (12 March 2025), NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska welcomed Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to the North Atlantic Council. Ms. Shekerinska emphasised Allies’ respect for the ICRC’s mandate and highlighted the importance of NATO-ICRC cooperation on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and humanitarian affairs.

NATO reaffirms its commitment to strengthen training and education on international humanitarian law

This week [28-31 October] a NATO delegation attended the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in Geneva. NATO reaffirmed its pledge to continue working with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to identify further opportunities to provide training and education on international humanitarian law. This is the third time that NATO makes this pledge (following the 32nd and 33rd International Conferences in 2015 and 2019).

NATO renews pledge to strengthen training on International Humanitarian Law

Last week in Geneva (9-12 December 2019), a NATO delegation attended the 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, in an observer capacity. The Organization formally pledged to continue a substantive dialogue with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to identify areas where training and education provided by NATO on international humanitarian law may be further enhanced.

Secretary General welcomes stronger NATO-EU cooperation

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed strengthened cooperation between the EU and NATO ahead of a meeting with EU Defence Ministers on Monday (25 June 2018). The Secretary General noted that he will sign a new Joint Declaration with the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission at the NATO Summit, setting out a shared vision for further cooperation.

NATO Defence Ministers build momentum toward stronger NATO-EU cooperation

Joined by High Representative Federica Mogherini and Defence Ministers from Finland and Sweden, NATO Defence Ministers met today to review the unprecedented progress that has been achieved over the past two years in NATO-EU cooperation. The two organisations have been working together on 74 concrete areas of cooperation, including hybrid and cyber, maritime operations, exercises and military mobility, and the fight against terrorism. NATO and EU leaders plan to sign a new joint declaration in July to further enhance their level of cooperation.

President of the International Committee of the Red Cross visits NATO Headquarters

The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, was welcomed to NATO Headquarters by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday (21 March 2018). The visit comes just over a year after the Secretary General’s historic first visit to ICRC Headquarters in Geneva. Wednesday’s meeting marked a continuation of regular dialogue between the leaders and touched on shared priorities for NATO and the ICRC, and the collaboration between the two organizations. President Maurer also addressed the North Atlantic Council.
