22 травня Генеральний секретар НАТО Яап де Хооп Схеффер зробив заяву, в якій привітав „владу і народ Чорногорії з проведенням вільного, чесного і добре організованого референдуму”.
Від імені НАТО я вітаю владу і народ Чорногорії з проведенням вільного, чесного і добре організованого референдуму. ОБСЄ дійшла висновку про те, що його результати демонструють волю народу, виявлену відповідно до узгоджених рекомендацій щодо референдуму. НАТО визнає результати, адже така оцінка, а також висока явка учасників, дають підстави вважати їх абсолютно легітимними.
НАТО закликає усі політичні партії і громадян поважати результати референдуму. Уряди в Белграді і Подгориці мусять розпочати обговорення багатьох двосторонніх питань, що вимагають розв’язання. Альянс очікує збереження добрих відносин з обома урядами.
