Lieutenant General William D. "Hank" Taylor is a United States Army officer with a career spanning over 36 years. He enlisted as a private in 1988 in the Field Artillery and was then commissioned as an infantry officer in 1990 in the Utah National Guard, 19th Special Forces Group. After graduating from Brigham Young University, he entered active duty in 1991 and attended rotary wing flight school at Ft. Rucker, AL.
Following flight school, Taylor served as a Scout PL & Troop XO with the 1st Squadron (Air), 17th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After the Armor Officer Advanced course and cavalry leaders’ course, he commanded D Troop, 4th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, in the 2nd Infantry Division in Camp Stanton, Korea, and later served as an Attack/Recon Troop trainer/Observer Controller in the 21st Cavalry at Ft. Hood, TX.
In 2001 he earned a M.S. in Exercise Physiology at BYU and then taught Boxing & Combative’s at the United States Military Academy and deployed to Afghanistan for OEF as a Joints Plans officer for CJTF-180/18th Airborne Corps in 2002 at Bagram AB.
In 2004 he graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and then served as a Squadron S3 & XO in 2-17 Cavalry, 101st Airborne Div, deploying to Kirkuk, Iraq OIF in 2005. From 2007-2009 Taylor served as the 101 ABN DIV G33 CHOPS and RC-East CJ33 CHOPs in OEF at Bagram in 2008. From 2009-2011, he commanded the 2nd Squadron (Air), 17th Cavalry Regiment, deploying to RC-South Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2010. He then served as the Aviation Branch Chief/OPMD at the U.S. Army Human Resources Command, followed by another deployment to Afghanistan as CJ3/G3 of RC-East/CJTF-101 at Bagram AB after graduating from the Air War College at Maxwell, AFB.
From 2014 to 2016, Taylor commanded the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade in Korea and then served as Chief of Staff for the Eighth United States Army. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 2018 while serving as the Deputy Commanding General–Maneuver, 1st Cavalry Division. His subsequent commands included the United States Army Operational Test Command (Sep 2018 - May 2019) and then serving as Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan in Kabul, AFGH (Jun 2019 - Jun 2020). He also held roles on the Joint Staff as J35/DDRO (Jun 2020 - Jun 2022) and HQ’s DA G3, Director, Army Aviation (Jun 2022 - Apr 2023).
From May 2023 to June 2024, he was the Commanding General, 2nd Infantry Division (Combined) in Korea. His recent assignments include Director of Operations for UNC/CFC/USFK (Jun 2024 - Jul 2025) and Chief of Staff for Combined Forces Command and acting commanding general of the Eighth Army (Jul-OCT 2025).
He now serves as the US military representative to NATO. LTG Taylor is a Master Army Aviator with over 1,200 combat flight hours.
He and Cristen have been married for 36 years and have 6 children & 12 grandchildren.
