Mika Kalliomaa

Major General Kalliomaa was born 5 September 1966. He completed his conscript service in Pohja Brigade in Oulu in 1986-1987. Pursuing a military career, he graduated from the Finnish Military Academy in 1990 as an infantry officer, and his first posting was as an instructor in the Reserve Officer School in Hamina. In 1993 he completed the Infantry Captain Course. After the course started teaching cadets in the National Defence University.

Major General Kalliomaa completed the Senior Staff Officer and General Staff Officer Courses in 1998-2000. After completing these military education courses, he worked as a course director for continuing training courses for different personnel groups in the National Defence University’s Continuing Training Centre.

In 2000-2003 he completed a Doctor of Military Sciences studies while working full-time and defended his thesis in 2003. He then worked as a senior staff officer in the Defence Staff until the spring of 2006, when he deployed to KFOR Headquarters in Kosovo.

From the autumn of 2006 until spring 2009, Major General Kalliomaa worked as the Deputy Director of the National Defence Courses, before assuming command of the Guards Battalion in Helsinki. After battalion command, he worked at the Finnish Innovation Fund - Sitra and helped start a training programme for national decision-makers and influencers.

At the start of 2014 he became the Finnish Defence Forces Director of Public Affairs. At the start of 2016 Major General Kalliomaa became the Director of National Defence Courses.

He served as the Commander of Pori Brigade in 2018-2021. In the summer of 2021 he returned to the National Defence University and served as its Rector until the end of 2025. He started in his current position as the Finnish Military Representative to the European Union and NATO in January 2026.

Major General Kalliomaa has held numerous positions of trust in the Finnish Defence Forces, in different organizations and in business. Additionally, he has served as a board member in various organizations.

Major General Kalliomaa is married and has three adult children and two grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys various sports and reading.
