NATO and Iraq continue to strengthen their cooperation through defence education activities

Representatives from eight Iraqi professional military education institutions, led by Staff Lieutenant General Aqeel Mustafa Mahdi Al Rammah, President of the Iraqi Defence University for Military Studies, visited NATO Headquarters on 12 and 13 December 2023. The visit was part of the annual review of their defence education activities, within the framework of NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP).

NATO Mission Iraq takes on additional advisory and capacity-building tasks

Following a request from the Iraqi authorities and a decision by the North Atlantic Council on Thursday (17 August 2023), the scope of NATO Mission Iraq will also include advisory and capacity-building activities in support of the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and Federal Police Command.

Spain takes command of NATO Mission Iraq

Lieutenant General José Antonio Agüero Martínez of Spain assumed command of NATO Mission Iraq on Wednesday (24 May 2023) at a change of command ceremony in Baghdad. He succeeds Lieutenant General Giovanni Maria Iannucci of Italy, who had been in post since May 2022.

The Supreme Allied Commander Europe and the Chair of the NATO Military Committee visit NATO Mission Iraq

On 20-21 March 2023, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Christopher G. Cavoli, visited NATO Mission Iraq (NMI). During their visit they reviewed the mission’s activities and met with a range of Iraqi officials and representatives of the international community.

Italy assumes command of NATO Mission Iraq

On 10 May 2022, Lieutenant General Giovanni Iannucci from Italy assumed command of NATO Mission Iraq, following a change of command ceremony held in Baghdad. He succeeds Lieutenant General Michael Lollesgaard from Denmark, who had assumed his command on 6 May 2021.

Denmark reaffirms its commitment to command NATO Mission Iraq

Today (6 May 2021), Lieutenant-General Michael Lollesgaard of the Danish Armed Forces assumed command of NATO Mission Iraq, following a ceremony held in Baghdad. He succeeds Lieutenant General Per Olsen of the Danish Armed Forces, who had commanded the mission since November 2020.

Defence Ministers meet to address NATO 2030, burden-sharing, and missions in Afghanistan and Iraq

NATO defence ministers will meet via secure teleconference on Wednesday and Thursday (17-18 February 2021) to address NATO's missions in Afghanistan and Iraq, review progress toward fairer burden-sharing, and discuss the NATO 2030 initiative. Ministers will also meet with NATO partners Finland, Sweden, and the European Union to address shared security challenges.

Denmark assumes command of NATO Mission Iraq

Lieutenant-General Per Pugholm Olsen of the Danish Armed Forces is the new Commander of the NATO Mission Iraq, following a change of command ceremony held in Baghdad on 24 November 2020. He succeeds Major-General Jennie Carignan of the Canadian Armed Forces, who had assumed command of the mission in November 2019.
