NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska

Finally, we turn to integrated air and missile defence. NATO’s integrated air and missile defence is our first line of defence. And we have witnessed in the course of the last month repeated airspace violations by Russian drones and Russian aircraft and NATO has successfully intercepted ballistic missiles launched from Iran against our Ally Türkiye. So, the bottom line is, in order to keep all of us safe, we need more of these capabilities. We need many more. We need interceptors, sensors, command and control capabilities. And to do this faster and better – integrating the newest technologies into the capabilities – we must do them together, by pooling all our resources.

This is what Allies are doing. This is what we are seeing here today. On the screen you will see the scope and value of these initiatives.

These include multinational efforts to enhance our air defence capabilities against lower-level air threats, and to acquire passive air surveillance capabilities, allowing us to rapidly procure off-the-shelf solutions that we know work well.

We’re taking concrete steps to modernise also our command and control systems and adding more capabilities for ballistic missile defence. The NATO Support and Procurement Agency has acquired a large number of Patriot PAC 2 missiles in the last three years and it is in the process of acquiring more in the near future. We also see Allies doing more together. The Netherlands and Belgium are signing a memorandum of understanding for initiating joint procurement of several essential air defence systems and Türkiye is investing deeply in its remarkable defence industry for the production of a range of air defence systems.

Our companies themselves are also stepping up to deliver on demand. Rheinmetall Italia is announcing investments which will enable it to double the production capacity. And it will be done in a production plant in Rome that works on air defence capabilities and ammunition. All of these announcements are impressive. All of them are crucial and all of them are urgent. And this is all necessary to keep our skies safe, and to keep our deterrence and defence credible.

NATO Deputy Spokesperson Mark Sanders

Thank you. I would like to invite Belgium and Türkiye to remain on the stage. The other representatives may return to their seats.

For the new joint procurement initiative of the Netherlands and Belgium, and the Turkish investments in IAMD highlighted by the DSG, I would now like to invite Allied representatives from the Netherlands and Türkiye to join Belgium on the stage, as well as industry representatives from ASELSAN and Roketsan. I thank you very much. You may return to your seats.
