Sofia, 14-16 July 2025 – The Chair of the NATO Military Committee (CMC), Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, travelled to Bulgaria on the invitation by the Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov. In Sofia, CMC had the opportunity to meet the country’s top military and political leadership, but also to pay respects at the Unknown Soldier Memorial and visit the Novo Selo Training Area (NSTA).

During his meeting with the Admiral Eftimov, CMC praised Bulgaria’s crucial contributions to our shared security, highlighting the country’s “key role in Black Sea region and beyond, from the Western Balkans to the Middle East.” Admiral Cavo Dragone also engaged with the Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov, commending the Bulgarian contributions to Ukraine in terms of military equipment and humanitarian aid, since the start of the war.

The Chair also had the honour to meet with Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev and Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov. The discussions focused on the implementation of the decisions taken at the recent NATO Summit in The Hague, emphasizing the decisive role of the Bulgarian defence industry to meet the Alliance’s capability requirements, enhance effective deterrence, and promote prosperity across the Euro-Atlantic area.

The solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Unknown Soldier Memorial in Sofia marked a very intense moment of the official visit, with Admiral Cavo Dragone commemorating the hundreds of thousands of Bulgarian heroes who gave their lives defending their homeland. The Chair also visited the Novo Selo Training Area, where key multinational exercises take place to test and strengthen the combat-readiness of the NATO Multinational Battle Group (led by Italy). “These are concrete examples of our commitment to test and strengthen the combat readiness of NATO’s Forward Land Forces, across all domains,” said CMC.
