Synopsis

NATO’s Allied Land Command (LANDCOM) and US Army Europe and Africa (USAEURAF) recently demonstrated a low-cost counter-UAS (Unmanned Aircraft system) system procured by Poland and Romania to defend their airspace. Polish, Romanian, and US forces demonstrated the system, called Merops, in Poland on 18 November 2025. Launched from the back of a pickup truck, the drone can seek out targets autonomously using radio frequency, radar guidance or thermal signatures. Crucially, it can receive information from many different radar systems; for the Poland demonstration, the US Army linked it with the Italian-produced RPS-42 radar, proving its interoperability. US officials said each drone costs roughly USD 14,500 - just about one tenth of the cost of the Shahed drones Russia uses to attack Ukraine. In fact, the American-made system has already taken down more than 1,000 kill Russian drones in Ukraine, inflicting more than USD 200 million in losses with only USD 15 million worth of interceptors. USAEURAF loaned dozens of Merops interceptors and ground control stations to Poland and Romania as part of Eastern Sentry, a defensive activity declared by Allies following the 9 September violation of Poland's airspace by more than 20 drones. US Army Europe and Africa expertise and NATO LANDCOM authorities are being leveraged to identify combat-proven systems, accelerate the procurement process and get the right capability to the right place at the right time. Footage includes shots of Merops being launched from the back of a pickup truck at a training ground in Poland, as well as interviews with general officers from the United Kingdom and the United States.

Ukraine has been using this system for a number of years, very lethal system. So that's what you saw today is a demonstration of capability that both Poland and Romania have moved very quickly to acquire different systems. Again, we have capability to shoot down drones. We've been very effective with aircraft, other ground-based effectors to do that. But now we've got an effector that costs much less and enables us to kill them very effectively and at a much lower cost. So it means, again, we can buy more. More countries can buy them, without a huge cost. And also, the training is very short and the number of soldiers or military members needed to operate them are very few”.
