“So the MEROP system is designed to intercept and destroy UASs, predominantly UASs such as the Shahed or Geron that we're seeing flown by Russia”.
(03:25) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – US ARMY BRIGADIER GENERAL CURTIS W. KING, COMMANDING GENERAL, 10TH ARMY AIR AND MISSILE DEFENSE COMMAND
“So this system is very lethal. Ukraine has been using this system for a number of years, very lethal system. And so when you look at this, this would add another capability into NATO's inventory to be able to destroy any drones that make incursions into their airspace”.
(03:40) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – US ARMY BRIGADIER GENERAL CURTIS W. KING, COMMANDING GENERAL, 10TH ARMY AIR AND MISSILE DEFENSE COMMAND
“I think obviously the recent incursions in the NATO airspace has galvanised everyone to move faster, to look at other capabilities that we can employ very quickly. So that's what you saw today is a demonstration of capability that both Poland and Romania have moved very quickly to acquire different systems. Again, we have capability to shoot down drones. We've been very effective with aircraft, other ground-based effectors to do that. But now we've got an effector that costs much less and enables us to kill them very effectively and at a much lower cost. So it means, again, we can buy more. More countries can buy them, without a huge cost. And also, the training is very short and the number of soldiers or military members needed to operate them are very few”.
(04:27) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – BRIGADIER CHRIS GENT, DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF – TRANSFORMATION AND INTEGRATION, NATO LANDCOM
“What we are focused on now is mass, defeating mass, autonomy, putting machines in harm's way rather than our soldiers and our people in harm’s way. So I think we'll just continue to develop, and you will just see a steady upward trajectory in terms of how we take this method of warfare forward in the future”.
